Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) guidebook
The purpose of this guidebook is to provide you with information on how the service operates and how to interpret documentation generated and used by the lab.
Optical Stimulated Luminance (OSL) Video
OSL is the technology used within the crystals of each dosimeter’s slide that enables the lab to perform a read out of radiation exposure. This read out is related to the occupational radiation dose the worker received.

South African National Accreditation System (SANAS)
The South African National Accreditation System (SANAS) is the only national body responsible for carrying out accreditations in respect of conformity assessment, as mandated through the Accreditation for Conformity Assessment, Calibration and Good Laboratory Practice Act (Act 19 of 2006)
This link will redirect you to SANAS site where you can obtain information regarding different Conformity Assessment Bodies (CAB) to ensure they are accredited service providers.

South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA)
South African Health Products Regulatory Authority - Radiation Control regulates all activities involving electronic generators of ionizing radiation as well as radioactive sources used outside the nuclear fuel cycle. The aim is to protect patients, radiation workers, the public and the environment against over-exposure to ionizing radiation, without limiting its beneficial use.

National Nuclear Regulator (NNR)
International best practice for record keeping of internal and external national occupational radiation doses requires the utilisation of a central dose registry. To this end, the Joint Coordination Committee, formed by the regulatory bodies in South Africa, mandated a working group to establish a National Dose Register (NDR). The NDR is a centralised system for recording occupational radiation exposures in the country. The NDR data can be used for tracking a registered worker’s cumulative dose based on data provided by the authorisation holder or dosimetry service provider.

International guidelines
International Radiation Protection Association (IRPA) is the international voice of the radiation protection profession. It is an association of radiation protection professionals joining through national and regional radiation protection societies. IRPA promotes the worldwide enhancement of professional competence, radiation protection culture, and practice by providing benchmarks of good practice, and encouraging the application of the highest standards of professional conduct, skills, and knowledge for the benefit of individuals and society.
